What is a Postpartum Doula?

As a Postpartum Doula, I provide compassionate, non-judgmental support and nurturing to new and growing families in the first three months after the birth or adoption of a baby. Any advice I give as your doula will be supported by evidence based research. This means that the ideas we discuss are not just my personal thoughts- they are backed up by science. I can support recovery from and processing of birth, infant education, and parents’ overall adjustment to their new roles. Doulas can provide newborn care education, meal preparation, light housekeeping, and various other tasks that create an environment which fosters emotional and physical recovery for new parents. As a doula, I am trained in the basics of lactation, and would be happy to connect you to a Lactation Consultant if necessary for more hands on support. Doulas can also support with best bottle use practices.

Doulas can help with overall family adjustments. For example, I can help an older sibling with adjusting to the baby’s presence, or spend time with them to help them feel special, important, and included. Doulas can support with educating extended family members such as grandparents on various postpartum topics, i.e the importance of breastfeeding, along with connecting with them to organize other supports such as meal trains.

When you are choosing a Postpartum Doula, it is important that you consider what qualities are important to you in the person you choose to be with your family. As your doula, I bring many years of experience as an infant and toddler teacher and behavior specialist for parents with children 0-5 years old. I have extensive education experiences in social/emotional dynamics within families, along with a masters in child development. I am a Certified Educator of Infant Massage, and a DONA Certified Postpartum Doula. I have a passion for helping new parents cope with the emotions related to becoming a parent. This led me to become certified in Postpartum Mental Health (PMH-C) with Postpartum Support International.

Please note, doulas do not provide medical treatment or advice (such as examining the mother or baby, taking temperatures, blood pressure checks or any other medical care).
